This Caramelized Onion Dip is rich, creamy, and packed with sweet, jammy onions that make every bite irresistible. Ingredients
CARAMELIZED ONIONS
- 2 yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
DIP
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp chives, finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- Salt, to taste
FOR SERVING
- Potato chips
- Fresh vegetables
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat and add the butter and oil. Once melted, add the sliced onions and salt, stirring to coat the onions evenly. Cook for 25–30 minutes, stirring every 4–5 minutes, until the onions become deeply golden brown, soft and jammy. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning while encouraging slow caramelization.
- Remove the onions from the skillet and let them cool for 10–15 minutes. The onions should be richly browned with very little moisture remaining, creating the sweet, concentrated flavor that makes this dip so special.
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream and mayonnaise. Stir until completely smooth and creamy with no lumps remaining.
- Fold the cooled caramelized onions and chopped chives into the cream cheese mixture. Season with the black pepper and add additional salt to taste, mixing until everything is evenly combined.
- Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. The extra chill time creates an even creamier texture and deeper onion flavor.
- Serve chilled with your favorite potato chips, crackers, pretzels, or fresh vegetables.
